April 16, 2001: We got home and it was cold, the weather was gloomy. So about a week later we packed up and headed south again. We stopped about a hour away and spend about a hour with a woman friend of mine from the internet (ICQ). We stop for the night at a motel and then the next evening we arrived at a relative's house where we stayed for about a week.

During the next week that we were in this area we went to Chimney Rock, (walking trails from 1 1/2 hours to 4 hours)where part of the Last of the Mohichians was filmed along the Skyline-Cliff Trail.

And to Lake Lure where Dirty Dancing was filmed. We also made another trip to Pickens to the flea market that is held every Wednesday. It had rained the night before and we thought that it might be muddy but it wasn't. There is a house that I have been watching being built for the last 3 years so we went to see how they were coming on that project. Not done yet...we talked to the owner and he says that it will be another 2 years. We went to a circle car racing track one night. We wanted to check our e-mail so we went to a library with a huge world globe that fascinated us.

It is time to leave and go somewhere else. We head for the coast of North Carolina and decide that we will drive up along the coast. That night went camp out for the night a little north of Wilmington. The next morning we get packed up and head farther north. We have the radio on in the truck and hear the weather report.....39 degrees.

Driving up the coast we see a sign for Hammock State Park, the sign states that they have camping. We drive into the park but can't find any place to put up our tent. At the office we are told that to go to the campground we have to go by boat, backpack everything in, walk about 20 minutes to the camp sites. The boat leaves during the day every hour and it takes about 20 minutes to get there. We spend the night on Bear Island with only a few other people.

The next day after a two hour ferry ride from Cedar Island to the outer banks we get to the town of Ocracoke. On the ferry we met and talked to several people....two of those people were a man and his wife that were traveling by bicycle. They were from Kentucky and they said that they were heading for Nags Head. We find a campground about three miles north of town and sit up our tent. Here is where we spend the next couple of days. The next day we were driving around and we stopped a little farther north, drove in a parking area and then went down to the beach. While we were there the couple that we had met on the ferry, that were traveling by bicycle stopped in the same place. So again we talked to them and then they were on their way. We met several people while we were in this campground. That evening we went into town for supper. The weather is a little chilly and windy but they tell us that this is the time to be here becuase in the summer that it is crowded and hot. The following day we had breakfast at a nice resturant in town, visit the light house and have a early supper.

Now we pack up and then head north enjoying the scenery. The next stop that we make is Kitty Hawk where the Wright Brothers made their first flights. We asked where there was a campground because we haven't seen any. We are told to go to Colington. We find a campground that has hot showers that we haven't had in a while and also a laundry room that we need also. Next we set up the tent and then ask the man in the office where we can go to eat supper. He recommends the Oyster Bar just down the road. This restaurant has happy hour from 3-6 featuring 25 cent oyster on the half shell, steamed oysters, steamed shrimp, clams, and chicken wings. We order oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, chicken wings and a plate of steamed vegetables. The best meal, the biggest oysters and shrimp that we will have on this trip.

We come next to the town of Chinateaque. Nice little town, find a real nice campground that is nearest to the beach. We will stay here for two nights. There is a island here called Assateaque Island that we want to go to. It is a National Park but they don't have any campgrounds. Nice scenery, nice trails. There is also a wildlife refuse here. We are unaware that there is a seafood festival at one of the campground that takes place every year...we just missed it by a hour or so. They have some wild horses that we want to see here but they have them in a pasture and we can see them in a distance. The second day here we go to Nasa facility on Wallops Island where we take a tour. Later on we stop at the American Legion to visit with the locals and to watch the last episode of Surviors.

Picture taken from the bridge. The Cheaspeake Tunnel is where the you see the boat. In the distance you can see where the bridge starts again.

Now we cross into Maryland, go across the Chesapeake Bridge and through the tunnel to a pennisula that is between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Just south of Ocean City there is a National Seashore Park and they do have camping here. We set up our tent and it isn't long before we see our first wild horse roaming around in among the camp sites. They caution you about feeding or touching these animals because they kick and bite and can get sick from eating the food that the campers feed them. As I am looking for a horse to take a picture of with my digital camera, one sneaks up behind me and when I turn around I am nose to nose with this horse. I back away but the horse just stops and looks at me if to say "What is the matter with u?". Across from us are some campers and they are trying to get a horses head out of the trunk of their car without touching it or feeding it. That night we can hear them right outside of our tent snorting, running and playing. They were in the campground until about 3:00am. The next morning we don't see any of them.

This horse came right up behind me. I turned around and there it was.

The wild horses on Assateague Island, Maryland

The next state is Delaware. We don't camp or stop anywhere in Delaware except maybe shopping. Pennsylvania is our next camping spot at Hanover near Gettysburg. There are several trails that you can take so we choose one and go on a hour hike to a waterfall. The next day we tour the National Cemetary and the museum. The parking lot is so full that we have to go to the second overflow parking lot.

This part Pennsylvania and Maryland that we have been in is beautiful. Hill and mountains, winding roads, big, beautiful farms with horses. So now we are again in Maryland camping. Nice park, not many people here. There are big trees over our tent, and a full moon shinning through the trees is a site to see.

The following day we drive to Pennsylvania to spend the night at a relatives house. This is the last day of our trip, we drive home in the rain. We have had nice weather...this is the first rain we have had on our trip of about 3 weeks
